Week 2 match reports

Round two was played in perfect conditions across Friday and Saturday as seven of our eight competitive sides took the field. Friday night cricket was back with two under 12 games followed by under 14s and seniors on Saturday.

It was a great weekend for the club as we finished with 6 wins from the 7 games with lots of terrific individual performances and team efforts.

Under 12-3

HBCC 6/85 defeated Lilydale 2/50
Emma Mole 25 ret n.o, Hailey McLaughlin 12 and 1/2, Kaden Irvine 1/1

The under 12s kicked off there season in perfect conditions out at Lilydale and put on a terrific display with the ball and in the field to restrict Lilydale to just 50 from their 20 overs with just 11 wides and 3 no-balls. The Lilydale side protected their wickets well in the face of some very good bowling. We lost a wicket on the second ball for a shaky start before Emma took control with others holding up the other end. Some terrific shots were played with Emma and Hailey hitting boundaries down the ground and Xavier nailing a couple of cut shots. We lost a few too many wickets along the way but managed a good 35 run victory to start the year.

Under 12-6

HBCC 5/59 lost to Blackburn South 0/94
Cooper Flinn 21 n.o

Our younger under 12s side played their first game with 7 of the 10 kids playing their first game of under 12s. The kids did really well with the bat with four players reaching retirement as the team put together a good score of 5/59 from their 20 overs. Unfortunately the bowling and fielding didn’t quite go our way as our opponents put together a good score without loss but there were plenty of positives and the kids all had a great time.

Under 14-2

HBCC 2/151 defeated Warrandyte 6/97
Reuben MacCartney 41 ret n.o, Jed MacCartney 22 ret n.o, Lewis Miller 3/8

After a solid round one performance, our higher 14s put together an even better effort in round two to secure their first win of the year. Kallen and Jed got the boys off to a great start and both reached retirement before Reubs took control in the middle order with a fantastic 41n.o from just 30 balls to help the side to a big score from the 25 overs. The bowlers defended the score with tight bowling with Lewis taking the middle order apart with three wickets. Jono Dashwood grabbed his first wicket of the year as well with a very tidy 1/6 from 4 overs as the boys grabbed a big win.

Under 14-4

HBCC 9/88 defeated Croydon Ranges 8/71
Bailey Thomas 12 n.o, James Scott 10, Bailey Hanna 2/3, Tom Elford 2/14

We played our first home game of the year in perfect conditions but a couple of early wickets saw us get far from the perfect start. The boys all seemed to be able to get a start but regular wickets held us back with only Bailey reaching retirement. Fortunately we had kept the scoreboard ticking over despite the wickets. We struck early with the ball and in the field and were able to control the game from there. Bailey’s early proved telling as dis Tyson’s two run outs. In the end we managed a 17 run thanks to a real team effort with another tidy bowling performance.

Second XI

HBCC 7/369 defeated Kilsyth 211
Luke Morrison 86, Ethan Weston 76, Josh Pocock 39n.o, Braeden Gordon 36 and 3/35, Steve Darmody 29, Jamie McLauchlan 25, Brent Gordon 20, Pat Danaher 2/27, Mike Piper 2/28

The twos followed on from a strong batting performance in week one with a comfortable win at Kilsyth but with plenty to work on. Braeden and Mike bowled well eearly without luck before we broke through a few times. The Kilsyth bats worked hard and developed a couple of partnerships as the worked through the bowlers. After a few dropped catches, a few too many full tosses and some tardy fielding we found a way to knock them over a seal a big win.

Third XI

HBCC 2/150 defeated Warranwood 9/121
Elijah Slatter 33, Tom Dobson 30, Josh Smith 29, Andy MacCartney 1/1, Ravish Murali 1/4

The thirds got underway with a rare game at Heathmont Reserve and relished the opportunity. A strong team controlled the game from the outset with nine bowlers rolled out across the 36 overs. The wickets were shared by the bowlers and three run outs capped things off. The runs were chased down in pretty good time with the game stopped with nine overs still remaining. The top order all spent valuable time at the crease as the boys managed a comfortable win.

Fourth XI

HBBC 5/242 vs Wonga Park 5/141 (match in progress)
Bill Brown 75, Nick Graham 59, Gary Fenigan 51, Ronan Magee 39, Kyle MacCatney 3/26, Joel MacCartney 2/23, Justin Thyer 2/36, Reuben MacCartney 2/39

We returned to the field this week and bowled well to restrict Wonga Park to 224. Well done to Kyle MacCartney who picked up 3/26 off 7, with the other wickets being shared by Joel, Justin, Reuben and Steve. When we continued our batting innings, Bill batted beautifully to score 75 off 59 balls and we were eventually bowled out for 313. Overall it was a very disciplined effort with the ball and in the field. Some stand out batting helped set up a great win.
